Frequently Asked Questions

What causes dry eyes?

Dry eye disease results from insufficient tear production, excessive evaporation, or poor tear quality — often a combination. Contributing factors include aging, screen time (reduced blink rate), contact lens wear, medications (antihistamines, antidepressants, diuretics), autoimmune conditions like Sjögren's syndrome, and environmental factors.

Is dry eye a permanent condition?

Dry eye is often chronic but manageable. Addressing modifiable contributors — reducing screen time, optimizing the environment, reviewing medications — can improve symptoms significantly. Prescription treatments can produce sustained improvement, though most people require ongoing management rather than a cure.

How is dry eye different from eye allergies?

Dry eye causes burning, grittiness, and fluctuating vision — often worse with prolonged screen use or in dry environments. Eye allergies cause intense itching, watering, and redness — typically seasonal or exposure-triggered. The two can coexist, and itching is the most distinguishing symptom favoring allergies.

When should I see a clinician about dry eyes rather than using OTC drops?

Seek evaluation when OTC lubricating drops don't provide sufficient relief, when vision is affected, when symptoms are interfering with daily activities or contact lens wear, or when dry eyes are associated with other systemic symptoms suggesting an autoimmune cause.

What side effects are associated with dry eye treatments?

OTC lubricating drops are very well tolerated — preservative-free formulations are preferred for frequent use. Prescription cyclosporine (Restasis) and lifitegrast (Xiidra) may cause transient burning and stinging on instillation. Punctal plugs are safe; rare migration or irritation is possible.
