What is Dicyclomine HCl?

Dicyclomine HCl is an anticholinergic medication prescribed to treat irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) by reducing the painful intestinal spasms and cramping that characterize the condition. It works by blocking muscarinic receptors in the smooth muscle of the gastrointestinal tract, preventing the involuntary contractions that cause cramping, urgency, and abdominal pain. It's taken four times daily and provides relatively fast relief of acute spasm symptoms. Because it acts throughout the body's muscarinic receptor system, it can cause side effects like dry mouth, blurred vision, and dizziness.

GI smooth muscle relaxation

Blocks muscarinic acetylcholine receptors in intestinal smooth muscle, reducing the abnormal and painful spasms that drive the cramping, urgency, and abdominal discomfort of irritable bowel syndrome.

Anticholinergic antispasmodic

Interrupts the parasympathetic nerve signals that cause excessive intestinal motility and contraction—slowing gut activity and reducing the intensity and frequency of IBS cramping episodes.

Acute symptom relief

Works relatively quickly to reduce active intestinal spasm and pain, making it useful for managing IBS flares and providing relief during periods of heightened cramping and GI discomfort.
