What is Dicyclomine (Bentyl)?

Dicyclomine is an anticholinergic medication prescribed to treat irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) by reducing the painful intestinal spasms and cramping that characterize the condition. It works by blocking muscarinic receptors in the smooth muscle of the gastrointestinal tract, preventing the involuntary contractions that cause cramping, urgency, and abdominal pain. It's taken four times daily and provides relatively fast relief of acute spasm symptoms. Because it acts throughout the body's muscarinic receptor system, it can cause side effects like dry mouth, blurred vision, and dizziness.

GI smooth muscle relaxation

Blocks muscarinic acetylcholine receptors in intestinal smooth muscle, reducing the abnormal and painful spasms that drive the cramping, urgency, and abdominal discomfort of irritable bowel syndrome.

Anticholinergic antispasmodic

Interrupts the parasympathetic nerve signals that cause excessive intestinal motility and contraction—slowing gut activity and reducing the intensity and frequency of IBS cramping episodes.

Acute symptom relief

Works relatively quickly to reduce active intestinal spasm and pain, making it useful for managing IBS flares and providing relief during periods of heightened cramping and GI discomfort.

Frequently Asked Questions

How quickly does Bentyl relieve IBS cramps?

Dicyclomine typically begins reducing intestinal spasm within 30–60 minutes of an oral dose, making it useful for managing acute cramping episodes during IBS flares.

How long should I take Bentyl?

Bentyl is generally prescribed for short-term use during active IBS flares. Long-term continuous use carries greater anticholinergic side effect risk — your clinician will advise on the appropriate duration for your situation.

Can Bentyl be used for conditions other than IBS?

Dicyclomine is occasionally used off-label for other types of gastrointestinal spasm and for infant colic — though infant use is no longer recommended due to serious risks. Your prescribed use will be specific to your condition.

What side effects might I experience?

Dry mouth, dizziness, blurred vision, constipation, and difficulty urinating are the most common anticholinergic effects. Heat intolerance can occur because Bentyl reduces sweating — be cautious in hot environments.

Should I avoid driving while taking Bentyl?

Bentyl can cause drowsiness and blurred vision that may impair driving. Until you know how it affects you, exercise caution with driving or operating machinery — particularly with the first few doses.
