Frequently Asked Questions

When should I see a clinician about diarrhea rather than managing it at home?

Seek evaluation for diarrhea lasting more than 48–72 hours, associated with high fever, blood in stool, severe abdominal pain, signs of dehydration (dizziness, reduced urination), or in individuals who are elderly, immunocompromised, or recently traveled internationally.

How do I know if my diarrhea is caused by an infection?

Infectious diarrhea is often acute, sometimes associated with fever, cramping, and potential exposure to contaminated food or water. Stool testing can identify bacterial, viral, or parasitic causes when clinically appropriate — particularly when diarrhea is severe or prolonged.

Is it safe to take antidiarrheal medications like loperamide?

Loperamide is appropriate for non-infectious, non-bloody diarrhea to reduce frequency and fluid loss. It should not be used when infection with a fever-producing organism is suspected, as slowing gut motility can worsen some bacterial infections.

Could my diarrhea be caused by a medication I'm taking?

Yes — antibiotics, metformin, magnesium-containing supplements, certain blood pressure medications, and many other common drugs cause diarrhea. A medication review is an important part of evaluating persistent or recurrent diarrhea.

What side effects are associated with diarrhea treatments?

Loperamide can cause constipation and abdominal bloating — particularly if overused. Antibiotics prescribed for bacterial causes can worsen GI flora disruption and cause secondary yeast infections. Oral rehydration solutions are very safe and a key component of management. Diarrhea visit What to expect from a Diarrhea visit
