Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if what I'm experiencing is depression or normal sadness?

Clinical depression persists for two or more weeks, is present most of the day nearly every day, and involves multiple symptoms beyond sadness — including loss of interest, sleep and appetite changes, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, and feelings of worthlessness — that impair daily functioning.

Do I need medication, therapy, or both?

Both psychotherapy — particularly CBT — and antidepressant medication are effective for depression, with combination treatment showing superior outcomes for moderate to severe depression. For mild depression, therapy alone is often sufficient. Treatment choice depends on severity, preference, and access.

How long does it take for antidepressants to work?

Most antidepressants require 4–6 weeks at an adequate dose to produce meaningful symptom improvement, with full effect sometimes taking 8–12 weeks. Early side effects often precede benefit — which is a common reason people discontinue treatment prematurely.

How long will I need to take antidepressants?

Current guidelines recommend continuing antidepressants for at least 6–12 months after achieving remission to prevent relapse. For recurrent depression — two or more episodes — longer-term maintenance treatment significantly reduces recurrence risk and is commonly recommended.

What side effects are associated with antidepressant treatments?

SSRIs and SNRIs may cause nausea, headache, insomnia, and sexual side effects — many improving after the first few weeks. Bupropion avoids sexual side effects but may worsen anxiety initially. All antidepressants carry a black box warning regarding suicidality in patients under 25, requiring close early monitoring. Depression visit What to expect from a Depression visit
