What is Depo-Provera?

Depo-Provera is a long-acting injectable contraceptive containing medroxyprogesterone acetate, given as a shot every three months to prevent pregnancy. It's one of the most effective forms of birth control available—more than 99% effective with perfect use—and requires no daily action from the patient. It works primarily by preventing ovulation, and secondarily by thickening cervical mucus to block sperm. Many users experience lighter periods or no periods at all, which some find a significant benefit. Fertility may take several months to return after stopping injections.

Ovulation suppression

High-dose progestin prevents the LH surge required for ovulation, consistently eliminating the possibility of egg release and fertilization throughout the 3-month injection period.

Cervical mucus thickening

Creates a dense cervical mucus barrier that significantly impedes sperm motility and penetration—providing a secondary layer of contraceptive protection even in the rare event ovulation occurs.

Menstrual changes

Many users experience significantly lighter periods, irregular spotting, or complete cessation of menstruation over time—a common and for many patients welcome side effect of continuous progestin exposure.

Frequently Asked Questions

How effective is Depo-Provera at preventing pregnancy?

With typical use, Depo-Provera is over 94% effective. With perfect use — receiving every shot on time — effectiveness exceeds 99%. It's one of the most effective reversible contraceptive options available.

How long after stopping Depo-Provera will my fertility return?

Fertility return is often delayed after stopping — the average is 9–10 months, though it can take up to 18 months or longer in some people. This delay should be factored into family planning decisions.

Will Depo-Provera affect my periods?

Yes. Irregular spotting is common in the first 3–6 months. Many people eventually stop having periods entirely — about 50% after one year. Periods typically return after discontinuing, though it may take several months.

What side effects might I experience?

Weight gain, irregular bleeding, headache, decreased libido, mood changes, and bone density reduction with long-term use are the most notable concerns. Bone density generally recovers after stopping.

Can I use Depo-Provera if I'm breastfeeding?

Yes. Depo-Provera is generally considered safe to use while breastfeeding and is often recommended as a contraceptive option for postpartum patients who are nursing.
