Frequently Asked Questions

What are the signs of dehydration?

Mild dehydration causes thirst, dry mouth, darker urine, and decreased urine frequency. Moderate dehydration adds headache, dizziness, fatigue, and reduced skin turgor. Severe dehydration produces significant dizziness, rapid heartbeat, confusion, very dark or absent urine, and sunken eyes — requiring prompt clinical evaluation or emergency care.

When does dehydration require medical treatment rather than home fluid replacement?

Seek evaluation for inability to keep fluids down, severe vomiting or diarrhea for more than 24 hours, signs of significant dehydration (confusion, rapid heart rate, fainting), dehydration in infants, young children, elderly patients, or those with chronic illness, or dehydration following significant heat exposure.

Is water alone sufficient to rehydrate?

Water alone is adequate for mild dehydration without significant electrolyte losses. When dehydration results from significant vomiting, diarrhea, or excessive sweating, oral rehydration solutions — containing the right balance of sodium, potassium, and glucose — more effectively restore fluid and electrolyte balance than water or sports drinks alone.

Can I become dehydrated without feeling thirsty?

Yes — thirst is a late indicator of dehydration, particularly in older adults who have a blunted thirst response. Monitoring urine color (pale yellow is the target) is a more reliable practical guide. Athletes, elderly individuals, and those in hot environments should drink proactively rather than relying on thirst.

What side effects are associated with dehydration treatments?

Oral rehydration solutions are very safe. IV fluids — used in clinical settings for moderate to severe dehydration — can cause fluid overload if administered too rapidly, particularly in patients with heart or kidney disease. Electrolyte supplementation should match documented deficiencies to avoid over-correction. Dehydration visit What to expect from a Dehydration visit
