Frequently Asked Questions

What are the most common causes of excessive daytime sleepiness?

Obstructive sleep apnea is the most important and commonly missed cause — affecting millions of undiagnosed individuals. Insufficient sleep duration, poor sleep quality, narcolepsy, idiopathic hypersomnia, medication side effects, depression, hypothyroidism, and anemia are other significant contributors. A systematic clinical evaluation identifies the cause.

How do I know if my daytime sleepiness is from sleep apnea or just not sleeping enough?

Insufficient sleep resolves predictably with adequate sleep and tends to improve on weekends or vacation. Sleep apnea causes persistent, unrefreshing sleepiness regardless of time in bed — often with snoring, witnessed apneas, and morning headaches. A sleep study objectively distinguishes between them and other sleep disorders.

Could my medication be causing daytime drowsiness?

Yes — antihistamines, benzodiazepines, muscle relaxants, certain blood pressure medications, antidepressants, antiepileptics, and opioids are among the most common medication causes of daytime sedation. A medication review — particularly of recently added or dose-increased medications — is an important early evaluation step.

Is it safe to drive with untreated excessive daytime sleepiness?

No — excessive daytime sleepiness significantly impairs driving ability, reaction time, and decision-making. Patients with untreated sleep apnea or narcolepsy have substantially elevated motor vehicle accident risk. Treating the underlying cause is both medically and legally important for driving safety.

What side effects are associated with daytime sleepiness treatments?

CPAP for sleep apnea may cause nasal dryness and mask discomfort — manageable with equipment adjustment. Modafinil and armodafinil for narcolepsy/hypersomnia may cause headache and insomnia. Sodium oxybate (Xyrem) for narcolepsy carries significant CNS depression risk requiring strict usage protocols. Treating underlying depression or hypothyroidism often resolves associated sleepiness.
