Frequently Asked Questions

What causes dark circles under the eyes?

Dark circles have multiple causes — thin, translucent undereye skin revealing underlying vasculature (common in lighter skin tones), hyperpigmentation from sun exposure or post-inflammatory pigmentation (more common in darker skin tones), hollowing with volume loss creating shadow (common with aging), and allergy-related venous congestion. Fatigue worsens all of these.

Are dark circles a sign of an underlying health problem?

Usually not — most dark circles are cosmetic and related to genetics, skin type, and aging. Significant periorbital edema, puffiness, or color changes accompanied by other symptoms (thyroid disease, kidney disease, allergies) can be an exception and may warrant evaluation if suspected.

Can treating allergies improve dark circles?

Yes — allergic rhinitis causes venous congestion under the eyes ('allergic shiners') that contributes to darkening. Treating nasal allergies with antihistamines or intranasal steroids can reduce the vascular component of dark circles in allergy sufferers.

What cosmetic or medical treatments are effective for dark circles?

Topical retinoids and vitamin C serums improve skin texture and pigmentation over time. Topical caffeine temporarily reduces puffiness. Prescription hydroquinone addresses hyperpigmentation. Hyaluronic acid filler addresses volume-related shadow. Laser and light treatments target vascular and pigmentation components — choice depends on the underlying cause.

What side effects are associated with dark circle treatments?

Topical retinoids cause initial dryness and peeling. Hydroquinone may cause skin irritation and — with prolonged use — paradoxical darkening (ochronosis). Filler injections carry risks of bruising, vascular complications, and nodule formation in the delicate periorbital area. Laser treatments may cause temporary redness and pigmentation changes.
