What is Creon?

Creon is a prescription pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy (PERT) used to treat exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI)—a condition where the pancreas doesn't produce enough digestive enzymes to break down food properly. EPI can occur with chronic pancreatitis, cystic fibrosis, pancreatic cancer, or after pancreatic surgery. Creon contains the three main digestive enzymes—lipase, amylase, and protease—in a delayed-release capsule that protects the enzymes from stomach acid and releases them in the small intestine where digestion occurs. It's taken with every meal and snack.

Three-enzyme replacement

Provides lipase to break down fats, amylase to break down carbohydrates, and protease to break down proteins—replacing the full spectrum of digestive enzymes the pancreas can no longer produce in sufficient quantities.

Enteric-coated delayed release

The minimicrospheres inside Creon capsules are coated to survive stomach acid intact and dissolve only in the small intestine's alkaline environment—delivering active enzymes exactly where food digestion normally occurs.

Malabsorption and symptom correction

By restoring adequate enzyme activity in the small intestine, Creon improves the absorption of nutrients and fats, reducing the diarrhea, bloating, fatty stools, and unintentional weight loss that characterize exocrine pancreatic insufficiency.
