What is Creon?

Creon is a prescription pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy (PERT) used to treat exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI)—a condition where the pancreas doesn't produce enough digestive enzymes to break down food properly. EPI can occur with chronic pancreatitis, cystic fibrosis, pancreatic cancer, or after pancreatic surgery. Creon contains the three main digestive enzymes—lipase, amylase, and protease—in a delayed-release capsule that protects the enzymes from stomach acid and releases them in the small intestine where digestion occurs. It's taken with every meal and snack.

Three-enzyme replacement

Provides lipase to break down fats, amylase to break down carbohydrates, and protease to break down proteins—replacing the full spectrum of digestive enzymes the pancreas can no longer produce in sufficient quantities.

Enteric-coated delayed release

The minimicrospheres inside Creon capsules are coated to survive stomach acid intact and dissolve only in the small intestine's alkaline environment—delivering active enzymes exactly where food digestion normally occurs.

Malabsorption and symptom correction

By restoring adequate enzyme activity in the small intestine, Creon improves the absorption of nutrients and fats, reducing the diarrhea, bloating, fatty stools, and unintentional weight loss that characterize exocrine pancreatic insufficiency.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I need to take Creon with every meal?

Creon replaces the digestive enzymes your pancreas can no longer produce adequately. Without enzymes present during digestion, food — particularly fat — passes through unabsorbed, causing fatty stools, bloating, and malnutrition.

How do I take Creon correctly?

Swallow capsules whole at the start of each meal and with snacks. Do not crush or chew — the enteric-coated beads must reach the small intestine intact. If swallowing is difficult, capsules can be opened and beads sprinkled on soft acidic food like applesauce.

How will I know if my Creon dose is right?

Stool frequency, consistency, and color are key indicators. Fatty, pale, greasy, or foul-smelling stools suggest under-dosing. Your clinician will adjust based on symptoms, nutritional status, and possibly a fecal fat test.

What side effects might I experience?

Stomach pain, nausea, diarrhea, and constipation are the most commonly reported effects. At very high doses, a rare condition called fibrosing colonopathy has been reported in patients with cystic fibrosis — follow prescribed dose limits.

Can I take Creon with hot foods or beverages?

Do not mix the beads into hot food or beverages — heat destroys the enzymes. If opening capsules to sprinkle on food, use room-temperature or cool soft foods like applesauce or yogurt.
