What is Cozaar (Losartan)?

Cozaar is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) used to treat high blood pressure, protect the kidneys in people with Type 2 diabetes, and reduce the risk of stroke in patients with hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy. It works by blocking the receptor that angiotensin II—a potent blood vessel constrictor—binds to, allowing blood vessels to relax and reducing the strain on the heart. Unlike ACE inhibitors, Losartan is less likely to cause the dry cough that leads many patients to switch medications. It's taken once daily.

Angiotensin II receptor blockade

Blocks AT1 receptors that angiotensin II binds to, preventing the vasoconstriction, fluid retention, and cardiac stress that this hormone causes—lowering blood pressure through direct vessel relaxation.

Kidney protection in diabetes

Reduces intraglomerular pressure in the kidneys, slowing the progression of diabetic nephropathy and protecting kidney function over time—an important benefit beyond blood pressure control alone.

Cough-free ACE inhibitor alternative

Provides similar cardiovascular and renal protection to ACE inhibitors without blocking the bradykinin pathway that causes the persistent dry cough many patients find intolerable.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take for Cozaar to lower blood pressure?

Blood pressure typically begins to drop within the first week of starting losartan. Full effect at a given dose usually develops over 3–6 weeks. Your clinician may adjust the dose based on your response.

Why was I prescribed Cozaar instead of an ACE inhibitor?

Cozaar provides similar cardiovascular and kidney protection to ACE inhibitors without causing the persistent dry cough that affects up to 20% of people on ACE inhibitors — making it a preferred choice for many patients.

Does Cozaar protect my kidneys?

Yes. Losartan has specific clinical evidence for slowing the progression of kidney disease in people with Type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure — a benefit that extends beyond blood pressure reduction alone.

What side effects might I experience?

Dizziness — especially when standing up quickly — is most common when starting. Elevated potassium levels can occur with long-term use. Serious swelling reactions (angioedema) are rare but require immediate medical attention.

Can I take potassium supplements while on Cozaar?

Use caution. ARBs like Cozaar can raise potassium levels, and adding potassium supplements may increase this further. Always inform your clinician before starting any supplements, particularly potassium or salt substitutes.
