Frequently Asked Questions

What is COPD and how is it diagnosed?

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a progressive lung condition — encompassing emphysema and chronic bronchitis — causing airflow limitation and breathlessness. Diagnosis requires spirometry confirming a post-bronchodilator FEV1/FVC ratio below 0.70. Symptoms alone are insufficient for diagnosis.

Can COPD be reversed?

COPD is not reversible — lost lung function does not fully recover. However, disease progression can be significantly slowed with smoking cessation, which is the single most effective intervention at any stage. Medications improve symptoms and exercise tolerance and reduce exacerbation frequency and hospitalization risk.

What is the most important thing I can do for my COPD?

Stop smoking — if still smoking. Smoking cessation is the only intervention proven to slow COPD progression. Annual influenza vaccination, pneumococcal vaccination, and pulmonary rehabilitation are other high-priority evidence-based interventions alongside appropriate inhaler therapy.

What is the difference between a rescue inhaler and a maintenance inhaler?

Rescue inhalers (short-acting bronchodilators like albuterol) provide rapid relief during acute breathlessness. Maintenance inhalers (long-acting bronchodilators, inhaled corticosteroids) are taken daily to reduce symptoms, improve lung function, and prevent exacerbations — they don't provide immediate symptom relief.

What side effects are associated with COPD treatments?

Short-acting bronchodilators may cause tremor and palpitations. Long-acting beta-agonists carry similar concerns at higher doses. Inhaled corticosteroids increase risk of oral thrush and pneumonia — rinsing the mouth after use is important. Roflumilast (oral PDE4 inhibitor) may cause GI upset and weight loss.
