Frequently Asked Questions

How do I choose the right contraceptive method?

The best method balances effectiveness, your reproductive goals, health history, lifestyle, and personal preference. A clinical consultation reviews all appropriate options — including hormonal, non-hormonal, barrier, and long-acting reversible methods — in the context of your specific health picture.

Are hormonal contraceptives safe for everyone?

Most women can use hormonal contraceptives safely. Estrogen-containing methods are not recommended for women with migraine with aura, history of blood clots, certain cardiovascular conditions, or who smoke over age 35. Progestin-only options are appropriate for many women who cannot use estrogen.

How quickly does fertility return after stopping contraception?

For most methods — pills, patch, ring, injections — fertility returns quickly after stopping, often within 1–3 cycles. The depo-medroxyprogesterone injection (Depo-Provera) may delay return of ovulation for several months longer than other methods.

What is the difference between short-acting and long-acting contraceptives?

Short-acting methods — pills, patch, ring — require consistent use and offer quick reversibility. Long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs) — IUDs and implants — are more than 99% effective, require no daily action, and are reversible, but are inserted and removed by a clinician.

What side effects are associated with hormonal contraceptives?

Combined hormonal methods may cause nausea, breast tenderness, mood changes, and spotting — particularly in early months. Progestin-only methods and IUDs may alter bleeding patterns. Side effects vary significantly by method and individual — most improve with time or with a switch to a different formulation.
