What is Condylox (Podofilox)?

Condylox is a topical prescription medication used to treat external genital warts caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). It's a patient-applied treatment, meaning you apply it at home over a series of treatment cycles rather than requiring office procedures. Podofilox works by destroying the wart tissue directly, causing it to break down and slough off over time. It's applied twice daily for 3 consecutive days, followed by 4 days off, with cycles repeated as needed under your provider's guidance.

Antimitotic action

Disrupts cell division within wart tissue by interfering with microtubule formation, preventing wart cells from replicating and causing the abnormal tissue to break down and die.

Self-administered treatment

Designed for home application, Condylox gives patients the ability to treat external genital warts on a schedule that fits their life—without repeated clinic visits for each treatment session.

Cycle-based therapy

The 3-days-on, 4-days-off treatment schedule allows skin to recover between applications, balancing effective wart destruction with tolerability of the surrounding healthy tissue.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does treatment take?

Condylox is applied in cycles — twice daily for 3 days, then 4 days off. This cycle can be repeated up to 4 times. Most people see wart clearance within 4–6 weeks of consistent treatment.

Can I apply it to any warts?

Condylox is approved only for external genital and perianal warts. It should not be applied to warts inside the vagina, urethra, rectum, or mouth — these locations require different treatments.

Does it prevent HPV transmission?

Clearing visible warts reduces but does not eliminate transmission risk. HPV can still be present in surrounding skin. Condoms help reduce risk, and your partner may benefit from evaluation by their own clinician.

What side effects might I experience?

Local reactions at the application site — burning, stinging, redness, erosion, and pain — are very common and expected. These reflect the medication working. Avoiding healthy skin during application minimizes irritation.

Will the warts come back after treatment?

Recurrence is possible because HPV remains in the body after warts clear. Some people experience recurrent outbreaks, particularly when the immune system is under stress. Your clinician can discuss long-term management.
