What is Clotrimazole Otic?
Clotrimazole otic is a prescription antifungal solution applied to the ear canal to treat otomycosis—a fungal infection of the outer ear that causes itching, discharge, and discomfort. Fungal ear infections are less common than bacterial ones but can be persistent and require targeted antifungal treatment. Clotrimazole works by disrupting the fungal cell membrane, killing the fungus directly in the ear canal. It's applied as drops several times daily for an extended course, as fungal ear infections often require longer treatment than bacterial infections to fully clear.
Ergosterol membrane disruption
Blocks fungal lanosterol 14α-demethylase, preventing ergosterol synthesis and destabilizing the fungal cell membrane—causing fungal cell death directly within the ear canal at the site of infection.
Targeted ear canal delivery
Applied as drops directly into the ear canal, clotrimazole achieves high local antifungal concentrations exactly where the infection lives—without systemic exposure or the side effects of oral antifungal medications.
Extended treatment course
Fungal ear infections typically require 2–4 weeks of treatment for complete resolution—longer than most bacterial ear infections—making consistent daily application essential for clearing the infection fully and preventing recurrence.
