What is Lotrisone (Clotrimazole/Betamethasone)?

Lotrisone is a prescription combination topical cream containing clotrimazole, an antifungal, and betamethasone, a potent corticosteroid. It's used to treat fungal skin infections—such as tinea pedis (athlete's foot), tinea cruris (jock itch), and tinea corporis (ringworm)—when both antifungal treatment and anti-inflammatory relief are needed. Clotrimazole kills the fungus causing the infection while betamethasone reduces the associated redness, swelling, and itching. Because betamethasone is a high-potency steroid, use is limited to 2–4 weeks and it should not be used on the face or in skin folds where steroid side effects are more likely.

Dual antifungal and anti-inflammatory action

Clotrimazole disrupts fungal ergosterol synthesis to kill the dermatophytes causing the infection, while betamethasone suppresses the inflammatory skin response—treating both the infection and the itch and redness it causes simultaneously.

Faster symptomatic relief

The addition of the corticosteroid component provides quicker relief of the discomfort, scaling, and inflammation of fungal skin infections compared to antifungal-only treatments—improving patient comfort during the early treatment period.

Short-course limitation

Betamethasone's high potency requires limiting use to 2–4 weeks to avoid skin thinning, striae, and HPA axis effects—it's designed for acute infection management rather than extended maintenance treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What conditions is Lotrisone used for?

Lotrisone is prescribed for fungal skin infections — including athlete's foot, jock itch, and ringworm — when both antifungal treatment and relief of significant inflammation are needed simultaneously.

How long should I use Lotrisone?

Lotrisone is approved for up to 4 weeks for most fungal skin infections. Use should be limited to the prescribed duration — the betamethasone component is a high-potency steroid that shouldn't be used indefinitely.

Can I use Lotrisone on my face or groin?

The groin area is one of Lotrisone's approved uses for jock itch, but duration should be limited to 2 weeks. It should not be used on the face due to the risk of skin thinning and other steroid side effects in facial skin.

What side effects might I experience?

Local burning, stinging, itching, and redness at the application site are most common. With prolonged use, the betamethasone component can cause skin thinning, stretch marks, and reduced effectiveness of the antifungal over time.

Will the infection come back after treatment?

Completing the full treatment course reduces recurrence risk. Keeping the area clean and dry — particularly for athlete's foot and jock itch — and avoiding tight-fitting clothing helps prevent reinfection.
