What is Clarithromycin?

Clarithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic used to treat a range of bacterial infections including respiratory tract infections, skin infections, H. pylori-associated ulcers (as part of combination therapy), and Mycobacterium avium complex infections in immunocompromised patients. It works by binding to the bacterial ribosome and blocking protein synthesis—preventing bacteria from producing the proteins they need to grow and survive. It's available in standard and extended-release tablet forms, typically taken twice daily (or once daily for the extended-release formulation), and can be taken with or without food.

Binds to the 50S subunit of bacterial ribosomes, blocking translocation and preventing the synthesis of proteins essential to bacterial growth, reproduction, and survival.

Broad respiratory coverage

Effective against the atypical bacteria—Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Chlamydophila pneumoniae, and Legionella—that cause community-acquired pneumonia and are not covered by beta-lactam antibiotics, making it a key respiratory antibiotic.

H. pylori combination therapy

A core component of triple and quadruple H. pylori eradication regimens, where its antibacterial activity combined with a proton pump inhibitor and amoxicillin or metronidazole achieves high eradication rates.
