Frequently Asked Questions

What are circadian rhythm sleep disorders?

Circadian rhythm sleep disorders occur when the internal body clock is misaligned with the desired or required sleep schedule. Common types include delayed sleep phase disorder (night owl pattern), advanced sleep phase disorder, shift work disorder, and jet lag. Each involves difficulty sleeping or waking at the desired times.

Is delayed sleep phase disorder just being a 'night owl' or is it a real condition?

Delayed sleep phase disorder is a recognized clinical condition — not simply a preference. People cannot fall asleep until 2–6 AM regardless of effort, and wake naturally in the late morning. It causes significant functional impairment when social or work schedules require earlier wake times and doesn't respond to standard sleep hygiene advice alone.

How is circadian rhythm misalignment treated?

Light therapy — timed bright light exposure in the morning for delayed phase, evening for advanced phase — is the cornerstone of treatment. Melatonin at strategic low doses helps shift the clock timing. Chronotherapy (progressively adjusting sleep timing) and behavioral strategies are also used.

Can I shift my sleep schedule on my own?

Mild misalignment can often be addressed with consistent wake times, morning light exposure, and limiting evening light from screens. Significant circadian disorders — particularly delayed sleep phase — typically require structured clinical management to achieve and maintain meaningful schedule shifts.

What side effects are associated with circadian rhythm disorder treatments?

Light therapy may cause headache, eyestrain, or mild agitation — particularly if used incorrectly. Low-dose melatonin is very well tolerated with minimal side effects. Prescription sleep aids used short-term carry sedation and dependency risks and don't address the underlying circadian misalignment.
