What is Ciprofloxacin HCl?

Ciprofloxacin HCl is a broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections including urinary tract infections, respiratory infections, skin infections, bone and joint infections, and certain gastrointestinal infections. It's also used for anthrax exposure prophylaxis. Ciprofloxacin HCl works by blocking two bacterial enzymes essential for DNA replication and repair, causing bacterial DNA damage and cell death. It's available in oral and IV forms, with the oral tablet achieving blood levels similar to the IV formulation—making it a powerful outpatient antibiotic for serious infections. It's typically taken twice daily.

Dual topoisomerase inhibition

Blocks both DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, the bacterial enzymes required for DNA replication, repair, and cell division—causing lethal DNA strand breaks in susceptible bacteria and preventing the emergence of single-step resistance.

Broad-spectrum coverage with high tissue penetration

Effective against a wide range of gram-negative and some gram-positive bacteria, with excellent penetration into tissues including the lungs, prostate, bone, and urinary tract—reaching therapeutic concentrations where many other oral antibiotics cannot.

Oral Ciprofloxacin HCl achieves blood concentrations approaching those of IV administration, enabling outpatient treatment of serious infections that would otherwise require inpatient IV antibiotics—a practical advantage that reduces hospitalizations.
