What is Ciprodex Otic?

Ciprodex is a prescription ear drop combining ciprofloxacin, a fluoroquinolone antibiotic, with dexamethasone, a corticosteroid, used to treat bacterial infections of the outer ear (otitis externa) and middle ear infections in patients with ear tubes. Ciprofloxacin kills the bacteria causing the infection, while dexamethasone reduces the ear canal inflammation and swelling that cause pain and discomfort. Together, they address both the infection and the inflammatory response in a single product. It's applied directly into the ear canal twice daily for 7 days.

Dual antibiotic and anti-inflammatory action

Ciprofloxacin blocks bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV to kill ear infection-causing bacteria, while dexamethasone suppresses the inflammatory response—treating the infection and relieving pain simultaneously.

Fluoroquinolone ear canal coverage

Effective against the gram-negative bacteria—especially Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus—that most commonly cause outer ear infections, including strains that may be resistant to other topical antibiotics.

Pain and swelling reduction

The corticosteroid component rapidly reduces ear canal edema and inflammation, easing the significant pain and pressure of otitis externa and improving antibiotic penetration by opening a swollen canal.

How do I apply Ciprodex correctly?

Warm the bottle in your hand for 1–2 minutes before use. Lie with the affected ear up, instill the prescribed drops, then stay in that position for 60 seconds to allow the drops to penetrate the ear canal.

How quickly does Ciprodex work?

Most people experience meaningful pain reduction within the first 1–2 days. The antibiotic component continues clearing bacteria throughout the 7-day course — completing all doses is important for full infection resolution.

What side effects might I experience?

Local ear pain, discomfort, and residual itching during treatment are most commonly reported. Because Ciprodex is applied topically to the ear, systemic side effects are uncommon given minimal absorption into the bloodstream.

Can Ciprodex be used if my eardrum is perforated?

Ciprodex can be used in patients with patent tympanostomy tubes (ear tubes), but use with perforations not due to tubes should be discussed with your clinician — not all ear drops are safe with all types of perforations.
