What is Cipro (ciprofloxacin)?

Cipro is a broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections including urinary tract infections, respiratory infections, skin infections, bone and joint infections, and certain gastrointestinal infections. It's also used for anthrax exposure prophylaxis. Ciprofloxacin works by blocking two bacterial enzymes essential for DNA replication and repair, causing bacterial DNA damage and cell death. It's available in oral and IV forms, with the oral tablet achieving blood levels similar to the IV formulation—making it a powerful outpatient antibiotic for serious infections. It's typically taken twice daily.

Dual topoisomerase inhibition

Blocks both DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, the bacterial enzymes required for DNA replication, repair, and cell division—causing lethal DNA strand breaks in susceptible bacteria and preventing the emergence of single-step resistance.

Broad-spectrum coverage with high tissue penetration

Effective against a wide range of gram-negative and some gram-positive bacteria, with excellent penetration into tissues including the lungs, prostate, bone, and urinary tract—reaching therapeutic concentrations where many other oral antibiotics cannot.

Oral bioavailability advantage

Oral Cipro achieves blood concentrations approaching those of IV administration, enabling outpatient treatment of serious infections that would otherwise require inpatient IV antibiotics—a practical advantage that reduces hospitalizations.

Frequently Asked Questions

What infections is Cipro used to treat?

Cipro is a broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone used for urinary tract infections, respiratory infections, skin infections, bone and joint infections, certain sexually transmitted infections, and anthrax post-exposure prophylaxis.

Why should I avoid dairy or antacids close to taking Cipro?

Calcium in dairy products and minerals in antacids bind ciprofloxacin in the gut and dramatically reduce its absorption — by up to 90% in some cases. Take Cipro at least 2 hours before or 6 hours after these products.

Is it safe to exercise in the sun while taking Cipro?

Cipro increases sun sensitivity and also carries a warning about tendon rupture risk — particularly with strenuous activity. Avoid excessive sun exposure and high-impact exercise, particularly if you notice any tendon pain or swelling.

What side effects might I experience?

Nausea, diarrhea, headache, and dizziness are most common. Cipro carries an FDA black box warning for tendon rupture, peripheral neuropathy, and CNS effects — report any tendon pain, numbness, or confusion promptly.

Can Cipro be used for any infection?

No. Fluoroquinolones should be reserved for serious infections where other antibiotics are inadequate due to concerns about resistance and serious side effects. Your clinician prescribed it because it's the most appropriate option for your specific infection.
