Frequently Asked Questions

What is a chalazion and how is it different from a stye?

A chalazion is a chronic, painless eyelid cyst caused by a blocked meibomian (oil) gland — it develops slowly and is typically not infected. A stye (hordeolum) is an acute, painful infection of an eyelid gland — appearing red and tender, often with a visible pus point. Styes may evolve into chalazia.

Will my chalazion go away on its own?

Many chalazia resolve with consistent warm compresses and lid massage over 4–8 weeks — particularly smaller or recently formed ones. Larger or persistent chalazia are less likely to resolve spontaneously and may require steroid injection or surgical drainage.

How do I do warm compresses correctly for a chalazion?

Apply a warm (not hot), moist compress to the closed eyelid for 5–10 minutes, 3–4 times daily. Follow immediately with gentle circular massage toward the eyelid margin to encourage drainage of the blocked gland. Consistency over several weeks is key — sporadic use is much less effective.

When does a chalazion need to be drained or injected?

Chalazia persisting beyond 4–6 weeks despite warm compress therapy, causing significant vision obstruction, or that are cosmetically concerning are candidates for intralesional steroid injection (a simple office procedure) or incision and drainage by an ophthalmologist.

What side effects are associated with chalazion treatments?

Warm compresses are very safe. Intralesional steroid injection may cause temporary skin depigmentation or fat atrophy — particularly relevant in darker skin tones. Surgical incision and drainage is a minor procedure with low complication risk — temporary bruising and swelling are expected. Chalazion visit What to expect from a Chalazion visit
