What is Cefpoderm (Cefpodoxime)?

Cefpoderm is an oral third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic prescribed to treat a range of bacterial infections including respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, skin infections, and sexually transmitted infections like gonorrhea. It works by disrupting the construction of the bacterial cell wall, causing the bacteria to burst and die. As a third-generation cephalosporin, it has broader gram-negative bacterial coverage than earlier generations, making it effective against a wider range of pathogens. It's typically taken twice daily with food to improve absorption.

Beta-lactam cell wall disruption

Binds to penicillin-binding proteins on bacterial cell walls, blocking the cross-linking of peptidoglycan—the structural polymer that gives bacterial cell walls their strength—leading to cell lysis and death.

Third-generation gram-negative coverage

Broader spectrum than first- and second-generation cephalosporins, with enhanced activity against gram-negative bacteria responsible for respiratory, urinary, and skin infections.

Oral convenience

Available as an oral tablet or suspension, Cefpodoxime delivers third-generation cephalosporin coverage without requiring IV or IM administration—making it practical for outpatient treatment of infections that previously required inpatient antibiotic therapy.

Frequently Asked Questions

What types of infections does cefpodoxime treat?

Cefpodoxime is used for respiratory infections, ear infections, sinus infections, urinary tract infections, skin infections, and gonorrhea. As a third-generation cephalosporin, it covers a broader range of bacteria than older oral antibiotics.

Should cefpodoxime be taken with food?

Yes. Taking cefpodoxime with food — particularly a meal — significantly improves its absorption, resulting in higher blood levels and better clinical effectiveness. Avoid taking it on an empty stomach.

How long does a typical course last?

Course length depends on the infection — typically 5–14 days. Always complete the full prescribed course even if symptoms improve, to prevent recurrence and reduce the risk of antibiotic resistance developing.

What side effects might I experience?

Diarrhea, nausea, stomach upset, and headache are most common. If you develop severe diarrhea — particularly if watery or bloody — contact your clinician, as this can occasionally indicate C. difficile infection.

Is cefpodoxime safe if I have a penicillin allergy?

Cross-reactivity between penicillins and cephalosporins is low but possible. The type and severity of your penicillin allergy will determine whether cefpodoxime can be safely used — always inform your clinician before taking it.
