What is Cefaclor?

Cefaclor is a second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections of the respiratory tract, ears, skin, and urinary tract. It works by disrupting bacterial cell wall synthesis—binding to penicillin-binding proteins and preventing the cross-linking of the peptidoglycan structure that gives cell walls their strength, causing bacteria to lyse and die. As a second-generation cephalosporin, it has better gram-negative coverage than first-generation agents while retaining good gram-positive activity. It's available as capsules or a liquid suspension and is typically taken two to three times daily.

Beta-lactam cell wall disruption

Binds to penicillin-binding proteins in the bacterial cell wall, inhibiting the transpeptidation reaction needed to cross-link peptidoglycan—structurally weakening the wall and causing bacterial cell lysis and death.

Second-generation spectrum

Improved gram-negative coverage compared to first-generation cephalosporins, with activity against H. influenzae and Moraxella catarrhalis—pathogens commonly responsible for ear infections, sinusitis, and lower respiratory tract infections.

Pediatric-friendly suspension

Available as an oral suspension in addition to capsules, making Cefaclor practical for children with ear infections, respiratory infections, or skin infections who cannot swallow tablets.

Frequently Asked Questions

What infections does cefaclor treat?

Cefaclor is a second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used for ear infections, respiratory tract infections including pneumonia and bronchitis, sinusitis, urinary tract infections, and skin infections.

Should I take cefaclor with food?

Cefaclor can be taken with or without food, though taking it with food may reduce stomach upset. The liquid suspension can be taken with food. Shake the suspension well before each use.

How long is a typical cefaclor course?

Most courses last 7–10 days. Complete the full course even if you feel better before finishing — stopping early allows remaining bacteria to persist and increases the risk of recurrence or resistance.

What side effects might I experience?

Diarrhea, nausea, stomach upset, and rash are most common. Cefaclor has a slightly higher rate of serum sickness-like reactions than other cephalosporins — joint pain, swelling, and rash — which should be reported to your clinician.

Is cefaclor safe for children?

Yes. Cefaclor is commonly used in pediatric patients for ear infections and other common childhood bacterial infections. It's available as an oral suspension, making it practical for children who can't swallow tablets.
