Frequently Asked Questions

What is cardiac catheterization and why is it done?

Cardiac catheterization involves threading a thin catheter through blood vessels to the heart — allowing direct visualization of coronary arteries (coronary angiography), measurement of heart pressures, and assessment of valve function. It is used to diagnose coronary artery disease, evaluate heart failure, and assess valve disease when non-invasive testing is insufficient.

What should I expect during a cardiac catheterization procedure?

The procedure is performed in a cardiac catheterization lab under local anesthesia with sedation — taking 30–60 minutes. A catheter is inserted through the wrist (radial) or groin (femoral) artery. You'll be awake but relaxed. Contrast dye is injected to visualize the coronary arteries under X-ray. Minimal discomfort is expected.

Is cardiac catheterization also used for treatment?

Yes — percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI, or 'stenting') can be performed during the same procedure if significant coronary blockages are identified. This allows diagnosis and treatment in a single session, avoiding a return procedure. Your interventional cardiologist will discuss this possibility before the procedure.

How do I prepare for cardiac catheterization?

You'll be asked to fast for 4–6 hours before the procedure. A list of your medications will be reviewed — certain blood thinners and diabetes medications may need to be adjusted. Kidney function is tested before contrast use. Arrange a driver for the day of the procedure. You'll typically be monitored for several hours afterward.

What risks are associated with cardiac catheterization?

Cardiac catheterization is a low-risk procedure when performed by experienced operators — serious complications occur in less than 1% of elective cases. Risks include bleeding or hematoma at the access site, contrast dye allergic reaction or kidney effects, arrhythmia, and very rarely stroke or vascular injury. Risk-benefit discussion with your cardiologist precedes the procedure. Cardiac Catheterization Referral visit What to expect from a Cardiac Catheterization Referral visit
