What is Cabergoline?

Cabergoline is a dopamine agonist prescribed primarily to treat elevated prolactin levels, a condition called hyperprolactinemia. High prolactin can cause irregular periods, infertility, unwanted breast milk production, and low testosterone. Cabergoline works by mimicking dopamine in the brain, which naturally suppresses prolactin release from the pituitary gland. Taken once or twice weekly, it helps restore hormonal balance so your body can function the way it should.

Prolactin suppression

Activates dopamine receptors in the pituitary gland, directly reducing excess prolactin production that disrupts hormonal balance and reproductive function.

Hormonal restoration

As prolactin normalizes, many symptoms—like irregular cycles, low libido, and unwanted milk production—improve or resolve entirely over time.

Pituitary tumor management

For patients with prolactin-secreting tumors (prolactinomas), Cabergoline can shrink the tumor and lower prolactin without surgery.

Frequently Asked Questions

How quickly will my prolactin levels come down?

Most people see prolactin levels drop meaningfully within 4–8 weeks. Full normalization may take several months depending on how elevated levels were at the start and the underlying cause.

How often do I take it?

Cabergoline is typically taken once or twice per week — not daily. Your clinician will set the schedule based on your prolactin levels and how you respond to treatment over time.

Can cabergoline help with fertility?

Yes. When high prolactin is disrupting ovulation or menstrual cycles, normalizing prolactin with cabergoline often restores regularity and improves fertility outcomes without additional interventions.

What side effects might I experience?

Nausea, dizziness, headache, and fatigue are most common, especially early in treatment. Taking it with food and starting at a low dose helps reduce these. Serious side effects are uncommon at standard doses.

How long will I need to take it?

Duration depends on the underlying cause. Some people take it for 1–2 years; others need longer. Your clinician will monitor prolactin levels and adjust or discontinue treatment when appropriate.
