Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know how serious a burn is?

First-degree burns affect only the outer skin layer — causing redness and pain, healing in days. Second-degree burns involve the dermis — causing blisters, significant pain, and taking 2–3 weeks to heal. Third-degree burns destroy all skin layers — often painless due to nerve damage — and always require specialist care.

When does a burn require emergency evaluation?

Seek emergency care for burns covering more than 10% of body surface area, any third-degree burn, burns to the face, hands, feet, genitals, or major joints, circumferential burns, inhalation injury, chemical or electrical burns, and any burn in a child under 5 or adult over 60.

How do I treat a minor burn at home?

Cool the burn with cool (not cold or icy) running water for at least 10–20 minutes immediately after injury. Do not apply butter, toothpaste, or ice. After cooling, cover with a non-stick sterile dressing. Leave blisters intact — they protect the healing tissue beneath. OTC pain relievers manage discomfort.

Should I be concerned about infection in a burn wound?

Yes — burns are at significant infection risk. Signs of infection include increasing pain, swelling, purulent discharge, foul odor, fever, or red streaking around the wound. Any burn showing these signs requires clinical evaluation. Proper wound care and dressing changes significantly reduce infection risk.

What side effects are associated with burn treatments?

Topical silver sulfadiazine cream (commonly used for burns) may cause transient skin discoloration and — rarely — allergic reactions; it has largely been replaced by newer dressings in many settings. Pain management with NSAIDs or acetaminophen is safe at recommended doses. Surgical debridement and grafting carry standard procedural risks. Burn/Scald visit What to expect from a Burn/Scald visit
