What is Budesonide (Pulmicort)?

Pulmicort is an inhaled corticosteroid used as a daily maintenance therapy for asthma to reduce airway inflammation, prevent symptoms, and decrease the frequency of asthma attacks. Unlike rescue inhalers that provide immediate bronchodilation, Pulmicort works slowly over days to weeks by suppressing the chronic airway inflammation that makes the lungs hypersensitive and prone to bronchospasm. It's available as a pressurized inhaler or nebulizer suspension, and is one of the preferred inhaled steroids for children. It does not provide immediate relief during an acute attack and should not be used as a rescue medication.

Inhaled corticosteroid anti-inflammation

Budesonide suppresses the eosinophilic and mast cell-driven airway inflammation that underlies asthma, reducing mucus production, airway hyperresponsiveness, and the bronchial sensitivity that triggers attacks.

Preventive maintenance action

Works gradually over days to weeks to reduce baseline airway inflammation—lowering the frequency and severity of asthma attacks and reducing dependence on rescue bronchodilators with consistent daily use.

High local potency, low systemic exposure

Inhaled delivery concentrates Budesonide's corticosteroid activity directly in the airways while minimizing systemic absorption—providing effective inflammation control with a more favorable safety profile than oral corticosteroids for long-term use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I need to use Pulmicort every day even when I feel fine?

Pulmicort works by gradually reducing the chronic airway inflammation underlying asthma — not by relieving acute symptoms. Daily use — even on symptom-free days — maintains the anti-inflammatory effect that prevents flares.

How long before Pulmicort reduces my asthma symptoms?

Some benefit from the bronchodilating effect of formulations begins quickly, but the full anti-inflammatory effect builds over days to weeks of consistent use. Maximum benefit may take 4–8 weeks to fully establish.

Can I use Pulmicort during an asthma attack?

No. Pulmicort is a maintenance medication — it does not provide fast enough relief for an acute attack. A separate short-acting rescue inhaler like albuterol is needed for immediate symptom relief.

What side effects might I experience?

Oral thrush, hoarseness, and throat irritation are the most common with inhaled budesonide. Rinsing your mouth and gargling with water after each use — then spitting — significantly reduces thrush risk.

Is Pulmicort safe for children?

Yes. Budesonide is one of the most widely studied and preferred inhaled corticosteroids for children with asthma — available in a nebulizer suspension form that's particularly practical for young children.
