Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I have bronchitis or pneumonia?

Acute bronchitis causes a productive cough, chest discomfort, and sometimes low-grade fever — with clear lungs on exam. Pneumonia typically involves higher fever, shortness of breath, and abnormal breath sounds. A clinical evaluation — and sometimes a chest X-ray — distinguishes between the two.

Does bronchitis need antibiotics?

Most acute bronchitis is caused by viruses — antibiotics have no effect and are not recommended in otherwise healthy adults. Even when the cough produces yellow or green mucus, this typically reflects normal immune response rather than bacterial infection. Antibiotic overuse drives resistance.

How long does a bronchitis cough last?

The cough from acute bronchitis typically lasts 2–3 weeks — sometimes up to 6 weeks. This is longer than most patients expect. Cough persisting beyond 8 weeks, or associated with fever, shortness of breath, or weight loss, warrants further evaluation.

What can I do to feel better while recovering from bronchitis?

Staying hydrated, using a humidifier, honey for cough (in adults), and OTC cough suppressants or expectorants can provide symptomatic relief. Inhaled bronchodilators may be prescribed if significant wheezing is present. Rest and avoiding irritants like smoke are important.

What side effects are associated with bronchitis treatments?

OTC cough suppressants (dextromethorphan) may cause drowsiness. Guaifenesin is very well tolerated. Inhaled bronchodilators may cause tremor and palpitations. Unnecessary antibiotics carry risks of GI upset, yeast infections, allergic reactions, and — most significantly — antibiotic resistance. Bronchitis visit What to expect from a Bronchitis visit
