Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my toe is broken or just bruised?

A broken toe typically causes significant pain, swelling, bruising, and sometimes visible deformity or difficulty bearing weight. Bruising alone is often a contusion. An X-ray is the definitive way to distinguish fracture from soft tissue injury — though management of most uncomplicated toe fractures and contusions is similar.

Does a broken toe always need a cast or splint?

Most simple toe fractures — particularly of the lesser toes (2nd–5th) — are treated with buddy taping (taping the injured toe to the adjacent toe) and a stiff-soled shoe rather than a cast. Big toe (first metatarsal or hallux) fractures and significantly displaced fractures may require more formal immobilization or orthopedic referral.

When does a broken toe need to be seen by a specialist?

Fractures involving the big toe, open fractures, significantly displaced or angulated fractures, fractures in diabetic patients, or fractures associated with numbness or vascular changes warrant prompt evaluation — ideally with orthopedic or podiatric consultation.

How long does a broken toe take to heal?

Most lesser toe fractures heal within 4–6 weeks. Big toe fractures may take 6–8 weeks or longer. Return to normal footwear and activity is guided by symptoms and clinical assessment rather than a fixed timeline.

What side effects are associated with broken toe treatments?

Buddy taping may cause skin maceration between the toes — placing cotton or foam padding between them prevents this. NSAIDs for pain carry GI side effect risks. Poorly fitting shoes during healing can slow recovery. Surgical intervention for complex fractures carries standard procedural risks. Broken Toe visit What to expect from a Broken Toe visit
