Reasons to book your broken nose visit

A broken nose needs to be evaluated while the window for realignment is still open. This visit assesses the injury, checks for complications, and determines whether any intervention is needed.

Your nose was hit hard and you have pain, swelling, or bruising

Your nose looks or feels like it may have shifted position

You're having difficulty breathing through your nose after the injury

You want to know whether an X-ray or imaging is needed

The swelling has gone down and you want to assess whether realignment is appropriate

You want to make sure there's no septal hematoma that needs urgent drainage

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my nose is broken?

A broken nose (nasal fracture) typically presents with pain, swelling, bruising around the nose and eyes, tenderness over the nasal bridge, and sometimes a visible deformity or shift. Significant swelling in the first 24–48 hours can mask deformity — reassessment once swelling subsides (3–5 days) provides a clearer picture of alignment.

When does a broken nose require emergency evaluation?

Seek immediate evaluation for septal hematoma — a bulging, bluish swelling inside the nostril — which requires urgent drainage to prevent septal cartilage death and saddle nose deformity. Also seek prompt evaluation for difficulty breathing, significant bleeding that doesn't stop, or any facial injury with suspected orbital or skull involvement.

Does a broken nose always need to be set?

Not always — many nasal fractures without significant displacement or deformity heal without manipulation. Fractures causing cosmetic deformity or breathing obstruction can be reduced (set) under local anesthesia — ideally within 7–10 days of injury before significant bone healing occurs. After 2 weeks, definitive treatment requires a formal rhinoplasty.

What can I do at home to manage a broken nose before being seen?

Apply ice wrapped in a cloth for 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off during the first 48 hours to reduce swelling. Keep the head elevated. Avoid blowing the nose. Take OTC pain relievers (acetaminophen preferred over NSAIDs which may increase bleeding risk). Avoid contact activities until formally evaluated.

What side effects are associated with broken nose treatments?

Closed reduction under local anesthesia causes temporary pain and may require repeat assessment as swelling resolves. Post-reduction splinting supports healing. Surgical rhinoplasty for delayed treatment or complex fractures carries standard procedural risks including infection, scarring, anesthesia effects, and asymmetry requiring revision.
