Frequently Asked Questions

Why would I need a brain MRI?

Common reasons for brain MRI referral include persistent or unexplained headaches, neurological symptoms (numbness, weakness, vision changes, dizziness), cognitive changes, new-onset seizures, head trauma evaluation, or follow-up of a known neurological condition. MRI provides detailed soft tissue imaging not available with CT.

How is a brain MRI different from a CT scan?

MRI uses magnetic fields and radio waves — no radiation — and provides superior soft tissue detail, making it better for evaluating brain structure, white matter, and subtle abnormalities. CT scans are faster, better for detecting acute bleeding, and used when speed is essential or MRI is contraindicated.

What should I expect during a brain MRI?

The procedure takes 30–60 minutes. You'll lie still in a tube-shaped scanner — the machine is noisy. Ear protection is provided. Some studies require IV gadolinium contrast. You'll be asked to remove all metal. Claustrophobia is common — alert your clinician in advance if this is a concern, as open MRI or sedation options exist.

Do I need to do anything to prepare for a brain MRI?

Generally no special preparation is needed for a standard brain MRI. If contrast is ordered, kidney function is typically checked beforehand. Remove jewelry and metallic items. Inform the facility of any implanted devices — pacemakers, cochlear implants, certain aneurysm clips — as some are contraindicated.

Are there risks associated with brain MRI?

Standard MRI carries no radiation risk. Gadolinium contrast carries a very small risk of allergic reaction and should be used cautiously in patients with kidney disease. Claustrophobia-related anxiety is the most common practical concern. The procedure itself is non-invasive and safe for most patients.
