What is Bimatoprost (Lumigan)?

Lumigan is a prescription prostaglandin analog eye drop used to lower intraocular pressure in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. It works by increasing the drainage of aqueous humor from the eye through the uveoscleral pathway, reducing the pressure that can damage the optic nerve over time. Applied once daily in the evening, it's one of the most effective single agents for lowering IOP. A notable side effect with long-term use is increased eyelash growth and darkening of the iris and eyelid skin—effects that form the basis of cosmetic eyelash treatments derived from bimatoprost.

Prostaglandin analog outflow enhancement

Activates prostamide and prostaglandin FP receptors in the ciliary body, increasing uveoscleral outflow of aqueous humor and lowering intraocular pressure to protect the optic nerve from pressure-related damage.

Once-nightly efficacy

Applied once in the evening, Lumigan provides significant and sustained IOP reduction throughout the next 24 hours—once-daily dosing that matches or exceeds the pressure-lowering effect of twice-daily medications.

Eyelash and pigmentation side effects

Long-term use can gradually increase eyelash length, thickness, and darkness, and may darken the iris and periocular skin—changes that are generally cosmetic but should be discussed with patients before starting treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often do I need to use Lumigan?

Lumigan is applied once nightly — using it more than once daily can actually reduce its effectiveness. Apply one drop to the affected eye(s) each evening at a consistent time.

Will Lumigan change my eye color?

Yes — long-term use can gradually and permanently increase brown pigmentation in the iris of some people, particularly those with hazel, blue-green, or green eyes. This change is permanent and cosmetically important to discuss before starting.

How long before Lumigan lowers eye pressure?

Intraocular pressure reduction begins within hours of the first application and reaches its maximal effect within approximately 8–12 hours. Consistent nightly use maintains this reduction.

What side effects might I experience?

Eye redness, itching, burning, and increased eyelash growth are the most commonly reported effects. The eyelash changes — longer, thicker, and darker lashes — are why a bimatoprost formulation is also used cosmetically for eyelash enhancement.

Can Lumigan be used with other glaucoma drops?

Yes. Lumigan is often used alongside other pressure-lowering drops when a single agent isn't sufficient. Wait at least 5–10 minutes between applying different eye drops to prevent the second drop from washing out the first.
