What is Biktarvy?

Biktarvy is a complete, single-tablet HIV treatment regimen combining three antiretroviral medications—bictegravir, emtricitabine, and tenofovir alafenamide—taken once daily. It's approved for adults and children with HIV-1 who have no prior antiretroviral treatment history, or who are virologically stable on another regimen. Each component attacks HIV at a different stage of its replication cycle, making it highly effective at suppressing the virus to undetectable levels. When taken consistently, Biktarvy helps keep the immune system healthy and prevents HIV from progressing to AIDS.

Triple-mechanism viral suppression

Bictegravir blocks HIV integrase (preventing viral DNA from inserting into human DNA), while emtricitabine and tenofovir alafenamide block reverse transcriptase—targeting two distinct steps in the HIV replication cycle simultaneously.

High barrier to resistance

Bictegravir's integrase strand transfer inhibitor class has a particularly high genetic barrier to resistance, meaning HIV is less likely to develop mutations that allow it to replicate despite treatment.

Single-tablet simplicity

One pill, once daily consolidates a complete HIV regimen into a single dose—improving adherence, reducing pill burden, and making long-term treatment management significantly more sustainable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to take Biktarvy with food?

Biktarvy can be taken with or without food — no specific food requirements. Consistency matters most: taking it at the same time each day helps maintain steady drug levels for effective viral suppression.

What happens if I miss a dose?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember, unless it's almost time for the next dose — in that case skip it and resume normally. Do not double up. Consistent daily dosing is important to prevent resistance.

Will I need regular blood tests on Biktarvy?

Yes. Regular monitoring of HIV viral load, CD4 count, kidney function, and liver function is recommended — typically every 3–6 months once stable. This ensures the medication continues working and is well tolerated.

What side effects might I experience?

Biktarvy is generally very well tolerated. Nausea, diarrhea, headache, and fatigue are the most commonly reported effects, usually mild and improving over the first few weeks. Weight gain has been observed in some patients.

Is Biktarvy safe for long-term use?

Yes. Biktarvy uses tenofovir alafenamide (TAF), a newer formulation with less impact on kidney function and bone density than older tenofovir formulations — making it better suited for long-term HIV management.
