What is Benzaclin (clindamycin/benzoyl peroxide)?

Benzaclin is a prescription topical gel combining clindamycin, an antibiotic, with benzoyl peroxide, an antimicrobial and keratolytic agent, for the treatment of acne. The combination addresses acne through complementary mechanisms—clindamycin reduces the bacteria that drive inflammatory breakouts, while benzoyl peroxide kills bacteria through oxidative activity and helps prevent clindamycin resistance from developing. Applied once or twice daily, it's effective for both inflammatory papules and pustules. The combination is clinically superior to either ingredient alone and is one of the most commonly prescribed topical acne regimens.

Antibiotic bacterial suppression

Clindamycin inhibits bacterial protein synthesis in Cutibacterium acnes, reducing the bacterial population within follicles that triggers the inflammatory response behind papules and pustules.

Benzoyl peroxide resistance prevention

Benzoyl peroxide generates reactive oxygen species that kill C. acnes through a non-antibiotic mechanism—its inclusion alongside clindamycin significantly reduces the risk of antibiotic resistance developing with long-term use.

Combination synergy

Clindamycin and benzoyl peroxide attack acne-causing bacteria through two independent mechanisms simultaneously, producing greater antibacterial and anti-inflammatory efficacy than either agent alone—making the combination a preferred first-line topical acne treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is BenzaClin different from using clindamycin alone?

Adding benzoyl peroxide to clindamycin provides two important advantages: it kills bacteria through a second independent mechanism for greater effectiveness, and it significantly reduces the risk of antibiotic resistance developing with long-term use.

How long before BenzaClin improves my acne?

Most people notice meaningful reduction in inflammatory lesions — papules and pustules — within 8–12 weeks of once or twice-daily use. Full results continue developing over 3–4 months of consistent treatment.

Can BenzaClin bleach my clothes or pillow?

Yes. Benzoyl peroxide is a bleaching agent — it can stain or discolor fabric including clothing, bedding, and towels. Allow it to fully absorb before contact with fabric, and consider using white pillowcases.

What side effects might I experience?

Dryness, peeling, redness, and skin irritation are most common — particularly in the first few weeks as skin adjusts. Using a non-comedogenic moisturizer helps manage dryness. Starting with once-daily application reduces early irritation.

Should I apply BenzaClin to the entire face or just pimples?

Apply a thin layer to the entire affected area — not just individual pimples. Treating the whole area helps prevent new breakouts from forming and is more effective than spot treatment alone.
