What is Baclofen (Lioresal)?

Baclofen is a muscle relaxant and antispastic medication primarily prescribed for spasticity—the chronic muscle stiffness, spasms, and involuntary contractions associated with conditions like multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury, and cerebral palsy. Unlike medications that act on the muscle itself, Baclofen works in the spinal cord to reduce the excessive nerve signals that cause muscles to stay in a contracted state. It's taken orally several times daily, with doses gradually increased to achieve the best balance between muscle relaxation and manageable side effects like drowsiness.

GABA-B receptor activation

Activates inhibitory GABA-B receptors in the spinal cord, reducing the release of excitatory neurotransmitters that drive abnormal muscle tone, spasms, and involuntary contractions.

Spasticity relief

By calming overactive spinal reflexes, Baclofen reduces the painful, disabling muscle stiffness and spasms that interfere with movement, comfort, and daily function in conditions like MS and spinal cord injury.

Central mechanism

Works at the level of the spinal cord rather than directly on muscle tissue, allowing it to address neurologically driven spasticity more precisely than peripherally acting muscle relaxants.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long before baclofen reduces my muscle spasms?

Some people notice spasm reduction within the first few days, but the dose is usually increased gradually over several weeks. Full benefit may take 4–8 weeks to establish at an effective dose.

Can I stop taking it suddenly?

No. Stopping baclofen abruptly — especially at higher doses — can trigger serious withdrawal symptoms including seizures, hallucinations, and dangerous rebound spasticity. Always taper gradually under your clinician's supervision.

Will baclofen make me drowsy?

Drowsiness is one of the most common side effects, particularly at higher doses and when starting treatment. It often improves over time as the body adjusts. Avoid alcohol and sedating medications while on baclofen.

What side effects might I experience?

Drowsiness, dizziness, weakness, fatigue, nausea, and headache are most common. Confusion can occur in older adults. Most side effects are dose-dependent and improve with dose adjustment.

Is baclofen addictive?

Baclofen is not classified as a controlled substance and is not considered addictive in the traditional sense. However, physical dependence develops with regular use — which is why stopping gradually is essential.
