What is azithromycin?

Azithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic commonly known as a Z-Pack, used to treat a broad range of bacterial infections including respiratory infections, skin infections, ear infections, sexually transmitted infections like chlamydia, and atypical pneumonia. It works by binding to bacterial ribosomes and blocking protein synthesis, preventing bacteria from growing and reproducing. One of its most practical features is its long tissue half-life, which allows it to be taken as a short 3 to 5 day course while continuing to provide antibacterial coverage for up to 10 days after the last dose.

Bacterial protein synthesis inhibition

Binds to the 50S ribosomal subunit of bacteria, blocking the translocation step of protein synthesis — preventing the production of proteins essential for bacterial growth, reproduction, and survival.

Long tissue half-life advantage

Azithromycin concentrates in tissues at levels far exceeding blood concentrations and remains active for days after the last dose — allowing short 3 to 5 day courses to provide the equivalent of 10 days of antibacterial coverage.

Atypical pathogen coverage

Particularly effective against atypical bacteria — Mycoplasma, Chlamydophila, and Legionella — that cause community-acquired pneumonia and are not susceptible to beta-lactam antibiotics, making it a key respiratory antibiotic.
