Frequently Asked Questions

Why would I be referred for audiology testing?

Audiology evaluation is recommended for suspected hearing loss, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), ear fullness or pressure unresponsive to initial treatment, dizziness or balance problems with potential inner ear origin, before hearing aid fitting, and as part of monitoring for conditions or medications that affect hearing.

What does an audiological evaluation involve?

A comprehensive audiologic evaluation includes pure tone audiometry (testing hearing thresholds across frequencies), speech audiometry, tympanometry (middle ear function), and sometimes otoacoustic emissions and auditory brainstem response testing. The full evaluation takes 45–90 minutes and is non-invasive.

Is age-related hearing loss treatable?

Age-related sensorineural hearing loss (presbycusis) cannot be reversed — but it can be very effectively managed with hearing aids, which have improved dramatically in quality, discretion, and connectivity. Earlier adoption of hearing aids is associated with better outcomes and reduced risk of hearing-related cognitive effects.

Can hearing loss affect my brain health?

Evidence increasingly supports an association between untreated hearing loss and accelerated cognitive decline. Treating hearing loss with hearing aids is associated with reduced dementia risk in observational studies. This is an important motivation for early evaluation and intervention rather than delaying hearing loss management.

Are there risks associated with audiological testing?

Audiological testing is non-invasive and very safe — there are no known risks from pure tone audiometry or standard diagnostic tests. The evaluation provides important objective data that cannot be obtained from clinical history alone and guides appropriate intervention decisions.
