What is Arthrotec (Diclofenac - misoprostol)?

Arthrotec is a combination prescription tablet containing diclofenac, an NSAID, and misoprostol, a prostaglandin analog—designed to provide anti-inflammatory and analgesic relief for arthritis while protecting the stomach from the GI side effects that NSAIDs commonly cause. Diclofenac reduces pain and inflammation, while misoprostol replaces the protective prostaglandins that diclofenac's COX inhibition depletes in the gastric lining—reducing the risk of ulcers and GI bleeding. It's taken with food two to four times daily and is particularly appropriate for arthritis patients at higher risk for GI complications.

NSAID anti-inflammatory paired with GI protection

Diclofenac inhibits COX-1 and COX-2 to reduce prostaglandin-driven inflammation and pain, while misoprostol replenishes the gastric mucosal prostaglandins that diclofenac's COX-1 inhibition depletes—addressing both therapeutic need and its primary side effect.

Ulcer risk reduction

Misoprostol stimulates mucus and bicarbonate secretion and reduces gastric acid output, protecting the stomach and duodenal lining from the ulcerogenic effects of NSAID therapy—particularly important for older patients and those with prior GI history.

Convenience of co-formulation

Combining the NSAID and cytoprotective agent in a single tablet ensures both are taken together consistently—preventing the GI risk that arises when NSAID therapy is taken without gastroprotective coverage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Arthrotec contain two ingredients?

Arthrotec combines diclofenac — an anti-inflammatory pain reliever — with misoprostol, which protects the stomach lining from the ulcer-causing effects that NSAIDs can produce. The gastroprotection is built into each tablet.

How is Arthrotec better than taking diclofenac alone?

Diclofenac alone significantly increases the risk of stomach ulcers and GI bleeding. The misoprostol component actively replaces the protective prostaglandins that diclofenac depletes, substantially reducing this GI risk.

Can women of childbearing age take Arthrotec?

With caution. Misoprostol causes uterine contractions and can cause miscarriage. Arthrotec is contraindicated in pregnancy and in women of childbearing potential who are not using reliable contraception.

What side effects might I experience?

Diarrhea, stomach cramps, and nausea — largely from the misoprostol component — are the most commonly reported effects. Taking it with food and starting at a lower dose helps manage these GI side effects.

Should I take Arthrotec with food?

Yes. Taking Arthrotec with food reduces GI side effects from both the diclofenac and misoprostol components. Avoid taking it with milk or antacids, however, as these can affect absorption.
