The ANA Reflex Panel screens for antinuclear antibodies — immune proteins that attack the body's own cells — and automatically runs a comprehensive set of specific antibody tests when the initial screen is positive. This reflex design provides a far more detailed and clinically actionable picture than a standard ANA screen alone, helping to identify which autoimmune condition may be involved.

What is an ANA test and what does it screen for?

An ANA (antinuclear antibody) test looks for antibodies that attack the body's own cells — a hallmark of autoimmune disease. It's used as a first-line screen for conditions like lupus, Sjögren's syndrome, scleroderma, and other systemic autoimmune disorders.

What does a positive ANA result mean?

A positive ANA alone doesn't diagnose an autoimmune disease. Up to 20% of healthy people have a mildly positive ANA. The reflex panel automatically adds more specific antibody tests when the initial ANA is positive — giving a more complete picture before any conclusions are drawn.

What is the 'reflex' component of this test?

If the initial ANA screen is positive, the lab automatically performs additional antibody testing — such as anti-dsDNA, anti-Smith, SSA, SSB, and others — to help characterize whether a specific autoimmune condition is more likely. This is included in the panel without requiring a separate order.

Do I need to fast for this test?

No fasting is required for the ANA Reflex Panel. You can eat and drink normally before your blood draw.

Should I stop any medications before testing?

Certain medications can affect ANA results — including hydralazine, procainamide, and some others. Do not stop any medication without clinician guidance, but mention all medications when booking so results can be interpreted correctly.
