What is Amoxicillin/Clavulanate (Augmentin)?

Augmentin is a combination antibiotic that pairs amoxicillin—a broad-spectrum penicillin—with clavulanate, an agent that blocks the bacterial defenses that would otherwise make amoxicillin ineffective. Together, they treat a wider range of bacterial infections than amoxicillin alone, including many that have developed antibiotic resistance. It's commonly prescribed for sinus infections, ear infections, skin infections, urinary tract infections, and more. It's taken orally, typically two to three times daily with food.

Dual-action formula

Amoxicillin disrupts bacterial cell wall construction, causing bacteria to burst and die, while clavulanate prevents resistant bacteria from breaking down the antibiotic.

Resistance coverage

Clavulanate neutralizes beta-lactamase enzymes—a key resistance mechanism—allowing the antibiotic to work against bacteria that would otherwise survive it.

Broad infection treatment

Together, the combination covers a wider range of bacteria than amoxicillin alone, making it effective for more stubborn or mixed bacterial infections.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why was I prescribed Augmentin instead of regular amoxicillin?

Augmentin is used when your infection is likely caused by bacteria that have become resistant to amoxicillin alone. The clavulanate disables that resistance mechanism, making the antibiotic effective again.

How long does a typical course last?

Most courses run 5–10 days depending on the infection type and severity. Completing the full course is important — stopping early can allow remaining bacteria to persist or develop further resistance.

Should I take it with food?

Yes. Taking Augmentin at the start of a meal significantly reduces the nausea and stomach upset some people experience and also improves clavulanate absorption for better overall effectiveness.

What side effects might I experience?

Diarrhea and nausea are most common. Taking it with food helps. Serious reactions like severe rash, liver effects, or allergic responses are rare but should be reported to your clinician promptly.

What if I'm allergic to penicillin?

Augmentin is a penicillin-type antibiotic. If you have a known penicillin allergy, inform your clinician before taking it — the type and severity of your past reaction will determine whether it's safe.
