What is Alinia (Nitazoxanide)?

Alinia is an antiprotozoal and antiviral medication used to treat infectious diarrhea caused by Cryptosporidium parvum and Giardia lamblia—two intestinal parasites commonly contracted through contaminated water or food. It's particularly important for treating Cryptosporidium in immunocompromised patients where the infection can be serious and prolonged. Nitazoxanide works by interfering with a key enzyme in anaerobic energy metabolism used by parasites. It's taken orally twice daily for 3 days, with the suspension form available for pediatric patients. Food improves absorption and tolerability.

Pyruvate ferredoxin oxidoreductase inhibition

Blocks PFOR, an enzyme essential to the anaerobic energy metabolism of Cryptosporidium and Giardia, disrupting the parasite's ability to generate energy and survive within the intestinal tract.

Dual parasite coverage

Effective against both Cryptosporidium parvum and Giardia lamblia with the same mechanism of action—providing reliable treatment for two of the most common causes of infectious diarrhea from contaminated water sources.

Short 3-day course

The full treatment requires only three days of twice-daily dosing, making it a convenient, well-tolerated regimen that's easy to complete fully—important for ensuring the infection is cleared completely.

Frequently Asked Questions

What infections does Alinia treat?

Alinia is FDA-approved to treat diarrheal illness caused by Cryptosporidium parvum and Giardia lamblia — intestinal parasites commonly acquired from contaminated water. It's available for both adults and children.

How long is the Alinia treatment course?

The standard course is three days of twice-daily dosing — one of the shorter antiparasitic regimens available. Completing all doses is important for full parasite clearance.

Should I take Alinia with food?

Yes. Taking Alinia with food significantly improves absorption and reduces GI side effects. The tablet and liquid suspension should both be taken with a meal for optimal effectiveness and tolerability.

What side effects might I experience?

Abdominal pain, nausea, headache, and diarrhea are the most commonly reported effects. A harmless yellow discoloration of the urine or eyes has been reported — this is a known and temporary side effect that resolves after treatment.

Can I get Cryptosporidium or Giardia again after treatment?

Yes — reinfection is possible through continued exposure to contaminated water or surfaces. After treatment, practice good hand hygiene and avoid drinking untreated water, particularly when traveling or camping.
