What is Airsupra (Budesonide - albuterol)?

Airsupra is a combination pressurized inhaler containing budesonide, an inhaled corticosteroid, and albuterol, a short-acting bronchodilator—the first combination rescue inhaler approved for asthma in adults. Traditionally, rescue inhalers contained only albuterol, but Airsupra adds anti-inflammatory budesonide to treat the underlying airway inflammation at the same time as the bronchospasm is reversed. This approach addresses both the symptom (airway narrowing) and a key driver of the attack (inflammation) with every rescue dose. It's used as needed when asthma symptoms arise, not as a scheduled maintenance therapy.

Rescue plus anti-inflammatory action

Albuterol rapidly opens constricted airways by relaxing bronchial smooth muscle, while budesonide simultaneously targets the airway inflammation that drives and perpetuates the asthma attack—combining fast relief with inflammatory suppression in one inhaler.

Inflammation treatment at rescue

Traditional rescue inhalers only relieve bronchospasm without addressing inflammation. Airsupra delivers ICS therapy at the moment of acute symptoms—when airway inflammation is actively contributing to the attack—a fundamentally different treatment approach.

As-needed dosing

Used at the onset of asthma symptoms, Airsupra provides relief while also reducing the inflammatory response that could worsen or prolong the attack—potentially reducing the severity and duration of breakthrough episodes.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is Airsupra different from a regular albuterol rescue inhaler?

Airsupra is the first rescue inhaler that combines albuterol with an inhaled steroid — budesonide. Traditional rescue inhalers contain only albuterol. Airsupra treats the airway inflammation driving the attack alongside the bronchospasm.

Can I use Airsupra as my daily maintenance inhaler?

No. Airsupra is a rescue inhaler used as needed when asthma symptoms occur — not a scheduled daily maintenance therapy. A separate daily controller inhaler may still be needed for long-term asthma management.

Do I need to rinse my mouth after using Airsupra?

Yes. As with other inhaled corticosteroid-containing products, rinsing your mouth with water and spitting after use reduces the risk of oral thrush from the budesonide component.

What side effects might I experience?

Rapid heartbeat, shakiness, and nervousness from the albuterol component are expected at higher use frequencies. Oral thrush risk from budesonide is reduced by mouth rinsing. Headache and throat irritation can also occur.

Will my insurance cover Airsupra?

Coverage varies by plan. As a newer medication, prior authorization may be required. Check with your insurance plan about coverage, and ask your clinician about patient assistance programs if cost is a barrier.
