What is Aczone (Dapsone)?

Aczone is a prescription topical gel containing dapsone, an antimicrobial agent, used to treat acne vulgaris in patients 12 years and older. Unlike retinoids or benzoyl peroxide, dapsone works through anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial mechanisms—reducing the inflammatory acne lesions (papules and pustules) without the dryness and irritation associated with other topical acne treatments. It's applied once or twice daily to the entire face and is particularly well-tolerated, making it a useful option for patients with sensitive skin or those who haven't tolerated other topical acne medications.

Antimicrobial activity

Inhibits bacterial dihydropteroate synthase, disrupting folate synthesis in Cutibacterium acnes—reducing the bacterial population within follicles that triggers the inflammatory response behind acne breakouts.

Anti-inflammatory mechanism

Beyond its antimicrobial action, Dapsone suppresses neutrophil activity and oxidative tissue damage at the site of acne lesions, directly reducing the redness, swelling, and pain of inflammatory papules and pustules.

Tolerability advantage

Produces significantly less skin dryness, peeling, and irritation than retinoids or benzoyl peroxide-based treatments—making it a particularly valuable option for patients with sensitive skin or those who have experienced intolerance with other topical acne therapies.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does Aczone take to clear acne?

Clinical trials showed meaningful improvement in inflammatory acne after 12 weeks of once or twice-daily use. Full results continue developing over 3–6 months of consistent treatment — patience is important.

Why is Aczone recommended for sensitive skin?

Aczone causes significantly less dryness, peeling, and irritation than retinoids or benzoyl peroxide — making it well suited for people with sensitive or rosacea-prone skin who haven't tolerated other topical acne treatments.

Can I use Aczone alongside other acne treatments?

Aczone can be combined with other topical treatments in many cases, but avoid using it simultaneously with products containing benzoyl peroxide — this combination can cause temporary orange or brown skin staining.

What side effects might I experience?

Oiliness, peeling, dryness, redness, and burning at the application site are the most commonly reported effects — and they're milder than most other topical acne medications. Systemic side effects are rare with topical use.

Is Aczone safe to use during pregnancy?

Limited safety data exists for topical dapsone during pregnancy. Consult your clinician before using Aczone if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant — alternative acne treatments with better pregnancy safety data may be preferred.
