What is Mirabegron?

Mirabegron is a prescription beta-3 adrenergic agonist used to treat overactive bladder (OAB), reducing urinary urgency, frequency, and urge incontinence. Rather than blocking nerve signals to the bladder like traditional anticholinergic OAB medications, it works by relaxing the bladder's detrusor muscle, increasing the bladder's capacity to hold urine before signaling urgency. This mechanism produces fewer dry mouth, constipation, and cognitive side effects than anticholinergics—making Mirabegron a preferred option for many patients, particularly older adults who are more sensitive to anticholinergic effects. It's taken once daily.

Stimulates beta-3 adrenergic receptors in the detrusor muscle, triggering smooth muscle relaxation that increases bladder storage capacity—reducing the urgency signals that drive the frequency and leakage of overactive bladder.

Anticholinergic-free tolerability

Achieves bladder relaxation through a fundamentally different receptor pathway than anticholinergic medications, avoiding the dry mouth, constipation, blurred vision, and cognitive effects that make many OAB patients discontinue treatment.

Cardiovascular monitoring consideration

As a beta agonist, Mirabegron can modestly increase blood pressure and heart rate—baseline blood pressure monitoring is recommended, and it should be used with caution in patients with uncontrolled hypertension.
