What is Metoprolol Succinate?

Metoprolol Succinate is an extended-release beta-1 selective blocker used to treat high blood pressure, angina, and heart failure, and to reduce the risk of cardiovascular events in patients with established heart disease. It works by blocking the effects of adrenaline on the heart, slowing heart rate, reducing blood pressure, and decreasing the force of each heartbeat—lowering the heart's overall oxygen demand. As an extended-release formulation, it's taken once daily and provides consistent beta-blockade throughout the day without the fluctuations of immediate-release metoprolol. It should never be stopped abruptly.

Beta-1 selective adrenergic blockade

Selectively blocks beta-1 receptors in the heart, reducing heart rate, contractility, and cardiac output—lowering blood pressure and myocardial oxygen demand while sparing beta-2 receptors in the lungs.
