Gerard DiLeo, M.D. is a retired obstetrician-gynecologist and pelvic pain specialist with more than 30 years of experience in private clinical practice and academic medicine.
As a contributor to General Medicine, Dr. DiLeo brings a seasoned, compassionate perspective to women's health topics, drawing from decades of surgical, diagnostic, and patient education expertise.
Experience
Dr. DiLeo earned his medical degree from Louisiana State University School of Medicine and completed a full obstetrics and gynecology residency at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, one of the busiest and most challenging training environments in the country at the time. He went on to build a 30-year career in private OB-GYN practice, where he became known for his attentive patient care and deep understanding of pelvic pain, hormonal health, and minimally invasive gynecologic surgery.
In addition to his clinical work, Dr. DiLeo has contributed to the academic side of medicine. He served for five years as an Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of South Florida School of Medicine, where he directed the Pelvic Pain Division within the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. In this role, he supervised residents, led Grand Rounds, and developed curriculum focused on chronic pelvic pain—an often misunderstood and underdiagnosed condition affecting millions of women.
He also held leadership roles within hospital administration, serving twice as Chief of Staff at a major hospital in the greater New Orleans area. Throughout his career, Dr. DiLeo has remained committed to clear communication between physicians and patients, believing that education is one of the most powerful tools in medicine.
Outside of the clinic, Dr. DiLeo has built a parallel career as a health writer and communicator. He is the author of several consumer health books published by McGraw-Hill, one of the world’s leading educational publishers. He also served as the obstetrical advisor to BabyZone, a trusted online resource for new and expecting parents, later acquired by The Walt Disney Company.
Today, as a writer for General Medicine, Dr. DiLeo shares well-informed, accessible content on OB-GYN topics, reproductive health, menopause, pelvic pain, and more—making complex medical topics understandable for everyday readers.
