What is Loteprednol Etabonate?

Lotemax is a prescription corticosteroid eye drop used to treat inflammation of the eye following surgery, injury, or associated with seasonal allergies and other ocular inflammatory conditions. It contains loteprednol, a corticosteroid designed to be metabolized rapidly after exerting its effect in the eye, limiting systemic and intraocular side effects. This makes it particularly useful for post-surgical inflammation and for patients who need ongoing ocular steroid treatment, as it carries a lower risk of raising intraocular pressure than older ophthalmic steroids like prednisolone. It's applied multiple times daily as directed.

Ocular corticosteroid activity

Suppresses inflammatory mediators—prostaglandins, cytokines, and histamine—within the eye, reducing redness, swelling, pain, and the cellular infiltration of ocular inflammation after surgery or injury.

Retrometabolic design

Loteprednol is metabolized to inactive compounds after acting in ocular tissue, minimizing the systemic absorption and sustained intraocular pressure elevation that are significant concerns with longer-acting ophthalmic corticosteroids.

Post-surgical inflammation control
